This might be a cause for concern . I intend to bring it up at the next meeting of the Pollution Regional Advisory Group planned for October 11/13 in Baku. Best Hamidreza Ghaffarzadeh (Ph.D) Project Manager, Project Coordination Unit, Caspian Environment Programme *** Algae in the Caspian Following reports on the appearance of a suspicious "spill" in the Caspian Sea, samples were taken from the spill and studied at the Aquatic Research Unit of the Department of Environment of the Gilan Province. According to the study the start point of the spill is at 698 , 38 37 North Coordinates; some 15 km to Anzali. The "spill" is an algae that belongs to the Cyanophyta Phylum and from Nodulariaceae family and Nodularia genus which has 2 species of N.spumiyena and N. harveyana in the Caspian Sea. Presence of these two algae in the north and south of Caspian shores is common but blooming of this volume in the limited area is a cause for concern. The algae is in the shape of individual or group lines and straight or curved. Its color is milky or brown. On basis of study, the size of it is about 300 Km /m2 in Gillan Province waters but only satellite images can give an accurate size. Algae bloom has existed in the Oceans and Seas during all periods but the phenomenon repetition has caused concern in the latest years. This phenomenon was rare in the Caspian Sea but the growth of some type point to a change in situation in recent years (2003, 04) with e example of 40 times growth of Cyanphyta during these years. Accumulation of these types of algae blooms can include toxic substances would be released in marine environment as leakage. Toxic substances would cause fish and aquatics mortality and could also have undesirable impacts for human communities. Blooming occurs under the certain climatic, optical, physical and chemical conditions and sudden changes in temperature and regional storms could disperse algae and return the marine environment to normal condition. Studying of factors contributing to algae such as nutrients in the bloom area, exact identification of the algae types and its roots being endemic or exotic algae, is essential. |
