Symposium VI: Caspian 2005
"The Link Between Great Civilisations"
1st - 9th September 2005

The Caspian Sea Symposium will continue the exploration of the common
ground between spirituality, scientific thought and practicality as a
way of identifying causes and potential resolutions to environmental
challenges and will call attention to the vitality of the region's
historical, cultural and religious heritage, promoting efforts to
overcome the stereotype that views the Caspian region as little more
than a backward and polluted place, valid only for the exploitation of
natural resources. The rich variety of peoples and cultures will
enable the participants to effectively address environmental
challenges, through work within diverse groups who share a common part
of the planet.

On a more practical level the Symposium aims to support greater
regional cooperation in the face of trans-boundary pollution problems
by building on the mechanisms already in place. In November 2003,
Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan - all five
littoral states - signed the Framework Convention for the Protection
of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea. This Convention provides
a framework for future cooperation among the Caspian states on key
issues involving the Sea, which includes: reducing land-based
pollution affecting the Sea, protecting fishing stocks and promoting
coastal zone management. It is crucially important that the momentum
created by the signing of the Convention be extended through continued
dialogue and engagement among interested regional and international
parties.

The Place

The Caspian Sea - Astrakhan (Russia), Baku (Azerbaijan), Bandar-e
Anzali (I.R.Iran), Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan), Aqtau (Kazakhstan).
Five countries in eight days, plenaries and working groups, with
environmental and cultural shore visits.

Participants
Two hundred participants - theologians, scientists, policy-makers,
environmentalists and the media. Speakers to be invited include
Professor Dr Klaus Topfer, Executive Director of UNEP, Mr Mark
Malloch-Brown, Chief of Staff to the UN Secretary-General and UNDP
Administrator and Mr Koichiro Matsuura, Director General of UNESCO.
The shore visits and plenaries will involve many more distinguished
individuals. The Symposium will also include fifty members of the
international media.
