One rupture was fixed only on Tuesday. It was caused by the manufacturer's defect in the pipe, the spokesman for the regional department for civil defence and emergency situations, Oleg Gusev, told Itar-Tass. The new ruptures were detected 40 and 42 metres from the first one. About 80 specialists from the Chernomortransneft company, including fire teams, are working at the sites. Forty-two pieces of heavy machinery have been used. As a result of the rupture, which was detected on May 9, several hundred cubic meters of oil spilt onto the ground. Repair teams have collected 400 cubic metres of spilt oil. In order to prevent the oil from spilling into the nearby river Yeya, a dam was erected around the ruptured sections of the pipeline. The oil spill covered an area of 18,500 square metres. The major Lisichansk-Tikhoretsk pipeline was ruptured near the village of Kislyakovskaya, Tikhoretskiy District, in the morning, the agency said. Over 200 t of polluted soil has been removed from the site of the accident over last four days, Nikolay Gerasimov, aide to the head of the Emergencies Ministry's Volga-Urals regional centre, told ITAR-TASS today. A total of 104 Emergencies Ministry's workers and 29 vehicles are engaged in the clear-up operation. Oil catchers have been installed at the scene. The oil spill covering the area of 8 ha occurred in Orenburg Region's Buzulukskiy District near the village of Zhilinka last Friday (23 April) as a result of an attempt of an illegal incision in the pipeline owned by the Transneft oil company. |
