/16:47 17.06.2002/ South Korea interested in developing oil fields on Kazakh
Caspian Shelf

Astana, June 17, 2002. (CNA). A consortium of South Korean companies plans to
participate in the development of oil fields in the Kazakh sector of the Caspian
Sea, South Korean Ambassador to Kazakhstan Che Syng-ho said after a meeting with
Kazakh Prime Minister Imangali Tasmagambetov.
He said that the consortium contains five leading companies from the Korean energy
complex that are successfully working abroad, including Samsung, Tesong and Songen.
The ambassador, having noted that the consortium has only recently been set up and
has just started to study the Kazakh oil and gas sector, did not name any concrete
fields that are of interest to the Korean side, Interfax reports.
"The Kazakh prime minister positively received the wishes of Korea to participate
in investment projects in the oil and gas sector in the republic, but also expressed
the hope that business people in that country would also show interest in other
branches of the economy, particularly in the area of processing agricultural produce
and in information technology.

/12:23 20.06.2002/ Gazprom, Rosneft sign Caspian oil deal

Moscow, June 20, 2002. (CNA). Chief Executive Officer of Gazprom Alexey Miller
signed an intention agreement with President of Rosneft Sergey Bogdanchikov.
According to it, the companies will be exploring the Kurmangazy oil field (Caspian
Sea) together.
According to the document, Rosneft and Gazprom will be rendering support to each
other in the process of obtaining 25% stakes in the project of developing
Kurmangazy. This project will be equally financed by authorized organizations from
Russia and Kazakhstan.
Gazprom supports the idea of appointing Rosneft the authorized organization
representing the Russian Federation in the project, a source in the gas giant
reported in an interview with RosBusinessConsulting.
At the first stage of the project, Rosneft will be the only representative of
Russia in the project and will finance both its 25% stake and a 25% interest rate
option. This option is provided for in a protocol of a Russian-Kazakh agreement on
sharing the northern part of the Caspian seabed that was signed by the Presidents of
the two countries on July 6, 1998. At the second stage of the project, after the
project will be put into commercial operation, Rosneft will hand over a stake in the
project equal to the volume of the option to Gazprom. All losses will be equally
divided, depending on the volume of owned shares.
Gazprom and Rosneft consider this agreement another serious step in the development
of collaboration between the two companies that will be promoting further economic
growth in Russia, increasing competitiveness of Russian businesses and ensuring
Russian-Kazakh integration.

/18:08 19.06.2002/ KIO plans to invest $3.5 bln at Karachaganak by 2003

Alma-Ata, June 19, 2002. (CNA). Karachaganak Integrated Organization (KIO)
plans to invest $3.5 million in a project to develop the Karachaganak gas
condensate field in Kazakhstan and to increase liquid hydrocarbon production
there to 7 million tonnes per annum.
KIO is a joint venture between BG, ENI (32.5% each), ChevronTexaco (20%) and
Lukoil 15%.
A source in the KIO press service told Interfax that it is planned to
increase production by building additional production and export capacities.
KIO works at Karachaganak under a contract for the development of this field
from 1998 to 2038.
A total of $160 million, from various sources, was invested in the field
from 1995 to 1997.
Construction at Karachaganak in the period from 1998 to 2003 should include
a gas processing plant, a power plant with a capacity of 240 megawatts and
three high-pressure compressors. In the coming year it is planned to launch
the Karachaganak-Atyrau export pipeline, which stretches 650 kilometers and
which will subsequently be linked to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium
pipeline. It is also planned to repair a unit for the separation of liquid
hydrocarbons next year, with a capacity of 4.6 billion cubic meters of gas
and 4.7 million tonnes of condensate per annum.
Gas production at Karachaganak in 2001 amounted to 3.75 bcm (4.6 bcm in
2000), with condensate production of 4 million tonnes (4.6 million tonnes).
This year KIO plans to increase production to 4.7 bcm and 5 million tonnes
respectively.
It is planned to set up additional capacity to increase condensate
production at Karachaganak to 12 million tonnes per annum by 2008.
Reserves at the Karachaganak field, which is being developed under a
production sharing agreement, are estimated at 1.2 billion tonnes of oil and
condensate and 1.35 trillion cubic meters of gas.
