/11:47 14.05.2002/ Construction of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline entered into a
real phase, Shevardnadze said

Tbilisi, May 14, 2002. (CNA). Georgia should pay more attention to the ecological
security and employment of local population while constructing the
Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze said in an
interview on national radio commenting his recent meeting with the head of the
BP-Azerbaijan company.
The Georgian President pointed out that these aspects were the priorities for the
European Union (EU) too. According to Shevardnadze, the European Commission is
considering the strategy of the Caucasian project and it will soon adopt a document
concerning this issue.
The project of the construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline has entered
into a real phase: the engineering part of the project is to be finished soon and
negotiations with the potential international investors are being conducted at
present, the president stressed. He was quoted as saying that the construction of
the pipeline would start in June, the Black Sea PRESS agency reported.

/17:05 17.05.2002/ Russian company to build oil pipeline in Kazakhstan

Astana, May 17, 2002. (CNA). The Russian Stroytransgaz company has won a tender for
the construction of a Kenkiyak-Atyrau oil pipeline in Kazakhstan, an official in the
MunaiTas company has told ITAR-TASS.
The throughput of the contemplated 450-km long pipeline will be 15m tonnes of oil a
year. The aggregate cost of the project is 160-170m US dollars. Contracts for the
delivery of pipes have already been signed: 70 per cent of piping is to be supplied
by the Volga tubing mill and 30 per cent by China.
Expert opinion is that the new pipeline's coming into operation will enable
companies which produce oil in the Caspian Sea area to reach out to the
Atyrau-Samara system of pipelines and via them to the world markets of oil.
Currently, oil products are delivered to the oil processing plants of Russia through
the only pipeline transportation system Kenkiyan-Orsk.
