We are happy to inform you that CENN implements the project on publishing of first regional environmental magazine - "Caucasus Environment". The magazine will be bilingual (English and Russian) and will be prepared by Georgian, Armenian and Azeri partners. In the future, it is planned to prepare magazine in national languages and English. The aim of CENN is to create an independent newsstand-quality publication on environmental issues - a magazine that could educate, inspire and empower Caucasus citizens to make a difference for the environment. Except information and education, the most important challenge of the magazine will be to help readers become active and more responsible as citizens. Magazine editions will contain the following rubrics in the following sequence: 1. The most important local, regional or international legal and institutional news and commentary from leading thinkers and relevant persons on these facts and matters; 2. Green environment; 3. Blue environment; 4. Brown environment; 5. Agriculture & Tourism; 6. Human geography; 7. Science & Technologies; 8. Environmental Education; 9. Calendar & Feedback & lifestyle tips & Thematic Photo Competitions; 10. Interesting and Entertaining Matters; 11. Acknowledgements. The magazine has main priorities, which should be highlighted all across the publication: - increase of environmental education and public awareness; - promotion of the environmental knowledge in families, secondary and high educational institutions; - popularization of modern environmental concepts and trends; - promotion of transboundary collaboration in the region in the filed of environment. Let us know if you are interested in publishing your articles in our magazine. We are attaching brief information regarding the type and format of the magazine. This will give you more information regarding what we are trying to achieve with this initiative. It will be great if you have relevant photos, maps or statistical data (even raw) to make as much visual information as possible. The first issue of the magazine is very important to establish an international image. We really want the magazine to be of HIGH quality and actual. It is planned to publish magazine in June, thus materials must be ready by the end of May. We will be very happy to establish constructive relations with you! Sincerely, CENN Magazine Team magazine@cenn.org Brief Description of the Magazine The magazine will be circulated in the Caucasus countries and abroad and will be targeted to the following groups: - State environmental institutions; - environmental NGOs; - educational institutions (universities, schools); - research institutions; - private companies dealing with the environment; - general public. The regional magazine will cover not only purely ecological matters but also, issues concerning entire environment: natural environment, social environment (interconnection between environment and poverty, gender issues, demography, health, historical cultural heritage, ethnography, archaeology, geopolitical issues, etc.), industry & environment, agriculture, tourism, land use, cadastre and all types of characteristics and peculiarities of the Caucasus region in terms of broad sense of environment. The magazine will cover issues the environmentalist needs to know and ordinary citizens will be interested to learn, from biodiversity to recycling and from the personal to the political. The magazine will have a characteristic of "Local - Country - Region" publication and will highlight information of international, national and local levels. Deadline for materials: May 20, 2002. Rubrics of the Magazine: The most important local, regional or international legal and institutional news and comments of relevant legal or physical persons - Information on new legal acts or amendments in legislation and conventions in the country; - Information on any changes in local environmental authorities and competent organizations; - Information on creation of relevant (environmentally oriented) international institutions, programmes, projects); - Commentary from leading thinkers and relevant persons on these facts and matters; - Photos of relevant persons, commenting the materials. Green environment (biodiversity, agro-biodiversity, landscape diversity, forestry) - News about above listed issues (green environment). This covers information regarding these nature resources, positive trends, negative facts (violations, etc.), and related natural calamities; - Information regarding the current state of green environment in the country. This should cover relevant statistical data, maps and different opportunities and means to visualize the information provided; - At least 2 photos in relevant quality. Blue environment (inland - rivers, lakes, groundwater, mineral and thermal water, glaciers - and sea water resources and issues related to water) - News about above listed issues (blue environment). This covers information regarding water, positive trends, negative facts (pollution, ways of management, violations, etc.) and related natural calamities; - Information regarding the current state of water and water management in the country. This should cover relevant statistical data, maps and different opportunities and means to visualize the information provided; - At least 2 photos in relevant quality. Brown environment (industry, pollution, past contamination, energy, oil and gas, mineral resources, waste, etc.) - News about above listed issues (brown environment). This covers information regarding industry, pollution, past contamination, energy, oil and gas, mineral resources, waste, etc., positive trends, negative facts (pollution, ways of management, violations, etc.) and related natural calamities; - Information regarding the current state of elements of brown environment and their management in the country. This should cover relevant statistical data, maps and different opportunities and means to visualize the information provided; - At least 2 photos in relevant quality. Agriculture & Tourism - News and information about Agriculture & Tourism. This covers, positive trends, negative facts (biofarming, food safety, soil and water pollution by chemicals and pesticides, drainage and melioration problems, salinization, waterlogging, land degradation, ways of management, violations, various ways of tourism industry, etc.); - Information regarding the current state of Agriculture & Tourism and their management in the country. This should cover relevant statistical data, maps and different opportunities and means to visualize the information provided; - At least 2 photos in relevant quality. Human geography - News and information about human geography (interconnection between environment and poverty, gender issues, demography, health, historical cultural heritage, ethnography, archaeology, geopolitical issues, etc.); - Information regarding the current state of elements of human geography. This should cover relevant statistical data, maps and different opportunities and means to visualize the information provided; - At least 2 photos in relevant quality. Science & Technologies - New scientific achievements in the field of environment, application of modern technologies and methods in the field of environment in the country. It will be important to obtain copyright permission from the scientist on already published articles. - Information regarding the current state of Science & Technologies in the country. This should cover relevant statistical data, maps and different opportunities and means to visualize the information provided; - At least 2 photos in relevant quality. Environmental Education - Educational article regarding the environmental matters in the broad sense. - To prepare interesting questions and short answers regarding environment of the country for the rubric "Test Yourself". Calendar & Feedback & Thematic Photo Competitions - Prepare list of upcoming environmental campaigns and events (meetings, seminars, conferences, workshops, etc.) for next months. - Reviews of new environmental publications. Interesting and Entertaining Matters - Prepare material on traditional customs, religious fists, and recipe of traditional dish of the country together with photos. CENN requests to provide a few major statistical data (brief) on the country of high environmental importance to place on the cover page.
