A spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on 10 December that Russia has informed the United States, Canada, Norway, and Denmark that it is ready to submit an official request to the UN for the extension of Russia's exclusive economic zone in the Arctic Ocean by 1.2 million square kilometers (see "RFE/RL Security Watch," no. 12, 9 October 2000, and no. 36, 17 September 2001) ITAR- TASS reported. The territory Russia seeks is extremely rich in hydrocarbon resources. The spokesman admitted that both the U.S. and Canada are "very reserved" about Russia's intentions to gain control of the territory. Radio Free Europe *** GAZPROM PUBLICIZES ITS STRATEGY. The annual meeting of the Gazprom board of directors made public the Russian gas monopoly's goals for 2002, Prime-TASS reported on 17 December. Those objectives include completing the major Yamal-Europe and Blue Stream pipeline projects, intensive exploration of the gas resources of Eastern Siberia and the Far East, and building the infrastructure to export gas to South Asian markets. (CNA). Exploitation of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan export pipeline will allow getting 15% profit from investments, the President of BP Azerbaijan David Woodward stated at today’s press conference. According to him, funds of private companies will make about 30% of sources, directed for implementation of the project, 70% - credits of international financial institutes. Woodward stressed that the participants of the project, which will attract credits will receive 15% of profit, and the companies, which invest their own sources to the project, will receive a 20-30% profit from implementation of this pipeline project. Heidar Aliev met in Baku on 11 December with Iran's envoy for Caspian issues, Mehdi Safari, to discuss bilateral relations and the legal status of the Caspian, Turan reported. Aliev reaffirmed Azerbaijan's willingness to participate in the North-South transport corridor project from Russia via the Transcaucasus to Iran. He also said that a group of Azerbaijani diplomats will travel to Tehran on 24 December to coordinate the text of the Treaty on Friendship and Cooperation and other bilateral documents that are to be signed during his planned official visit to Iran. In an apparent retreat from his reported statement six days earlier that he is ready to visit Iran immediately (see "RFE/RL Newsline," 6 December 2001), Aliev said that only after those agreements have been finalized can the time frame for his visit be finalized. The ITERA International group of companies and the BP British company are interested in the program for reconstruction of the Absheron underground gas depositories - Kalmas and Garadag, representative of the Azerigas Azeri state gas company informed CNA. The data on the afore-named project are given to both ITERA and BP. Reconstruction of the Garadag gas depository will require not less than USD 181 million, the Kalmas - USD 80 million. The projects for enlargement were elaborated by the Sofregas French company.
