The workshop is being organized by ISAR's Caspian program, which brings together environmental nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan working to resolve the environmental problems of the Caspian. The program is financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Academy for Educational Development, the Central Eurasia Project of the Open Society Institute, Rockefeller Family Associates, and the Trust for Mutual Understanding. The workshop will be the first component of ISAR's "NGO-TNC-Government Forum" designed in response to suggestions by community and business representatives at the September 2000 seminar "Developing Principles for Interaction between Nongovernmental Organizations and Transnational Corporations in the Caspian Region." Throughout the 3-day workshop, NGO, business and government representatives from the Caspian region will look at a variety of approaches to public information access, responsible corporate behavior, and legislative protection at the national and international levels. NGO representatives will discuss the range of strategies and tools available to understand the mechanisms for influencing corporate conduct. Oil company representatives will discuss their own social and environmental policies as well as their reasons for signing on to voluntary international codes of conduct, and government representatives will explain existing and planned legislation to guide, monitor and control the activities of corporations-national and international-operating in the Caspian region. Participants will work on real-life case studies to determine what combination of tools and strategies could be best utilized to design an effective public information campaign that would include all three sectors. NGO representatives from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan are invited to submit applications to ISAR. All applicants must be members of an NGO or initiative group working on environmental issues related to the Caspian basin. Successful NGO applicants will have existing experience in information dissemination and interaction with TNCs and/or government bodies, specifically in relation to environmental protection in the Caspian basin. ISAR's Caspian expert advisory board will review the applications and select up to five NGO participants from each country. Selected participants are expected to complete a series of preparatory readings and to take part in an exchange of information and ideas based on these materials prior to the workshop. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. Please send completed applications by November 7, 2001 to: ISAR-Central Asia 480004 Almaty ul. Shagabutdinova 128, kv. 7 E-mail: root@isar.almaty.kz All applicants will be notified by November 30, 2001. Thank you for your interest in ISAR's Caspian program, and good luck!
