SOCAR Drills Second Offshoot Of Exploration Well In GYUNESHLI
Drilling of the second offshoot of the first exploration well #28 from the
stationary platform #19 at Gyuneshli has begun. Drilling of the first
offshoot stopped at the depth of 2,920 meters due to geologic problems which
arose due to poor procurement.
The planned depth of the second offshoot makes up 2,330 meters. The well is
estimated to have the daily flow rate of 500,000 cu meters of gas.
The platform #19 intended for drilling eight gas production wells was
installed in the southern part of the field. A part of gas produced from the
fields will be distributed on the home market and the remaining part will be
used for gas-lift operation.

Computer-Based Operational System To Be Created In GYUNESHLI
A SOCAR's representative said that specialists are carrying out a project
for creation of a computer-based system to develop and implement the
programmes for optimum performance of every well. The system will help to
transfer data on shore for analysis and operative intervention if necessary.
SOCAR extracts the major part of its offshore gas in shallow Gyuneshli (6m
cu meters per day). SOCAR produced 1.669bn cu meters of gas from January to
September this year (77.8m cu meters above the plan) and 4,449,600 tonnes of
oil, (18,770 tonnes above the plan).
Non-recoverable reserves in Gyuneshli total 59.7m tonnes of oil and 16.373m
cu meters of gas. The fields are located southeast of the Apsheron
peninsula. It accounts for 63% of overall oil produced in Azerbaijan. SOCAR
is exploring 17 oil and gas offshore fields.

Russia's Evans Hails New Pipeline

16.10.2001
By Vladimir Isachenkov //Associated Press Writer//

Commerce Secretary Donald Evans on Monday hailed the first commercial shipment of oil along a
new Caspian pipeline built with the assistance of ChevronTexaco and praised the Kremlin's efforts
to liberalize the Russian economy and encourage foreign investment.
ChevronTexaco Corp. announced Monday it had completed loading the first tanker from the
pipeline operated by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, also known as CPC.
``U.S. companies are the largest investors in the CPC, over $1 billion,'' Evans said. ``The CPC
pipeline is the largest American investment in Russia that sends a powerful signal back to
America that the environment is right to invest in this country.''
The 980-mile pipeline, which connects the Tengiz oilfield in western Kazakstan to Russia's Black
Sea port of Novorossiisk, currently has a capacity of 30.8 million tons of oil a year, set to
expand to 73.7 million tons a year by 2015.
ChevronTexaco Vice Chairman Richard Matzke said Monday that so far, only 13.2 million tons of
oil had been pledged for the pipeline.
Evans praised Russian President Vladimir Putin (news - web sites) for expressing Russia's
sympathy and support for the United States following the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and
Washington.
``Separate and apart from the horrific attack of Sept. 11, it's obvious to the business
community that under President Putin's leadership, this country is moving toward developing a
market-based economy,'' Evans said.
Later Monday, Frito-Lay, the Texas-based snack food division of PepsiCo Inc., announced it would
invest $40 million in Russia to build a potato chip plant. PepsiCo is based in Purchase, N.Y.
Frito-Lay has already invested $20 million to develop a distribution system that reaches over 70
percent of Russia.

First Kazakh-Russia CPC oil being shipped

15.10.2001
//Reuters//

The first Kazakh crude from a new $2.5 billion pipeline was loaded on a tanker at Russia's Black
Sea Novorossiisk oil port on Monday after several months of delay, an oil industry source said.
The 1,580 km (980-mile) Kazakhstan-Russia pipeline, built by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium
(CPC) stretches from Kazakhstan's giant Tengiz oil field.
The first oil had been expected to flow in June, but customs and technical problems caused a
delay.
The pipeline is the first to be completed since the fall of the Soviet Union to ship oil to
Western markets from the Caspian Sea, where oil reserves are estimated to be similar to those of
the North Sea.
A formal announcement is expected to be made at an 0800 GMT news conference by U.S. Commerce
Secretary Don Evans, visiting Moscow with a delegation of U.S. businessmen.
CPC is led by U.S. oil major Chevron. It also unites the governments of Russia, Kazakhstan and
Oman with oil firms LukArco, Rosneft-Shell Caspian Ventures and Kazakhstan Pipeline Ventures LLC
Mobil Caspian Pipeline Company.
The news conference with Evans is also to be attended by the head of CPC, Russian Economic
Development and Trade Minister German Gref and the head of LUKOIL.
Initial capacity of the pipeline is expected to be 28.2 million tonnes a year (around 560,000
barrels a day). Its estimated final capacity will 67 million tonnes a year.
The Caspian area is the target of diplomatic intrigue, with the sea itself, on which five states
have borders, not yet formally demarcated between each country. It is bordered by Russia,
Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan.
Friction over territorial rights in the sea intensified this year when Iranian gunboats chased
off an Azeri vessel which was exploring disputed waters.
The United States, seeking to increase its influence in the region, has also been promoting
routes west which avoid Russia.
The main one to receive its backing is a pipeline costed at around $3 billion from the capital
of Azerbaijan, Baku, to the Turkish Mediterranean port of Ceyhan.
