(31.01.2001) Полный Текст Материалы на английском SEMINAR ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CASPIAN REGION YIELDS CONCRETE RESULTS From January 26-30, 2001 ISAR: Initiative for Social Action and Renewal in Eurasia held the seminar, "Beyond Oil and Gas: The Role of NGOs in finding Sustainable Solutions to Economic Development and Environmental Protection in the Caspian Basin." The third in a series of meetings focusing on areas critical to environmental protection in the Caspian Basin, the seminar was held in Astrakhan, Russia and focused on renewable resources as the basis for sustainable regional economic development. A team of trainers led the 25 participants-who represented environmental NGOs from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan-through sessions on alternative energy, marine bioresources and aquaculture, sustainable agriculture, and recreational and ecotourism. During the seminar, participants agreed on general principles for NGO cooperation to develop environmentally-sound economic development throughout the Basin, as well as concrete project ideas. These ideas included concrete plans to initiate the following activities: · a joint tourism project between Iran and Astrakhan oblast; · an analysis of the potential for projects utilizing solar, wind and biomass energy; · creation of an electronic database of "alternative" projects throughout the Caspian basin; · research on specific species that could be successfully harvested though mariculture projects; · an agreement to transfer technology from Russia to Turkmenistan to support commercial production of sturgeon. This agreement was reached with representatives from Bios, a local (Astrakhan) enterprise that produces sturgeon for commercial purposes and conducts scientific research to protect this endangered species. Representatives from the Astrakhan regional administration, KaspNIRKH, the Caspian Environment Program, Shell Oil, USAID and other local and international organizations also participated in the seminar. A roundtable discussion, which focused on exploring mechanisms for international and intersectoral cooperation resulted in concrete proposals for further interaction and information sharing with representatives from each sector. "Beyond Oil and Gas" is part of ISAR's Caspian program, a three-year project to support and strengthen cooperative activities among environmental NGOs in the Caspian Basin. The project is funded by USAID, the Central Eurasia Project of the Open Society Institute, Trust for Mutual Understanding, Rockefeller Family Associates, and the Academy for Educational Development, and is a joint project of ISAR-DC, ISAR-Moscow, ISAR-Central Asia, ISAR-Azerbaijan and Horizonti Foundation. *** Seminar Participant List "Beyond Oil and Gas in the Caspian: The Role of NGOs in Finding Sustainable Solutions to Economic Development and Environmental Protection" Kazakhstan 1.
