The Beahrs Environmental Leadership Program was established to link agricultural and environmental practitioners from around the world with up-to-date research and policy analysis in natural resource and environmental management at the University of California. The first three-week certificate course in Sustainable Environmental Management will be offered on the Berkeley campus in July 2001. [One of the six mini workshops in the July 2001 program is on Water Management, and addresses issues of scarcity, distribution, quality and contamination in various types of watersheds. Other workshop topics look relevant as well.] The Beahrs ELP is particularly interested in attracting participants from developing countries - environmental leaders seeking access to knowledge and tools that will build capacities for balanced environmental decision-making. Some partial and full scholarships are available for highly qualified applicants. The brochure, application and other information can be accessed by Internet: http://cnr.berkeley.edu/BeahrsELP. We would welcome your comments and questions by E-mail: BeahrsELP@nature.berkeley.edu. *** 3. Seminar "Free Trade? Fair trade!" Fair trade as a concept has become an ever important issue in the ongoing debate on Trade versus Aid as a way to help developing states. There is a lot to learn, discuss and propose. Therefore we organize a seminar: Title : "Free trade? Fair trade!" Subject : Alternatives to today's international (liberal) economy 1. World Trade, incl WTO 2. Fair trade 3. Alternative financing/saving. When: 15-20 March 2001 Where: Belgium, staying in Antwerp, youth hostel Number of working days: 6 Working languages: English, if necessary voluntary translation into French Financial: as usual, travel costs will be reimbursed and the participant will get lodging and meals for a fixed participation fee, max 150 euro Aims of the meeting: 1. LEARN: on how WT(O) works, on alternatives called 'fair trade', on current possibilities to invest ethically to stimulate these alternatives. 2. DISCUSS and be critical about WT(O) and 'fairness', on weaknesses of fair trade, on financing of social/ecological economy and development projects 3. PROPOSE common resolutions, that could also be used as FYEG-propositions, especially on the World Greens meeting in Sidney (April 2001). We will send at least one participant to Sydney to present our propositions! Main program elements, their contents/working methods: 1. WT(O): we will invite someone who was in Seattle, show a video, and then have some workshops. We'd like to discuss how WTO works and how it can be improved; it is an important institute in international trade, but we want to focus on alternatives. We also want to discuss the role of nations and NGOs. 2. Fair trade: invited speakers from NGOs, from international governance bodies and maybe someone from an NGO/developing country. There will also be active participation: workshops, debates, press group, action group etc. Also different kinds of role games, interactive learning, learning by intercultural exchange. 3. Alternative financing: ecological/ethical savings and investments are growing fast. We look at some (invite organizations), and will definitely put them in the broader framework of world trade, investments in the South, and capital movements. We will invite speakers from Hefboom (financing social economy), Alterfin (microcredits in the South), Triodos Bank (do only social, ecological and cultural loans) and/or Ethibel (granting certificates to ethical funds). We will also visit one of the projects/companies that was financed this way, maybe the Ecological House in Ghent, or a biological cheese factory, or ... 4. There will be an excursion, a combination of a didactic visit and sightseeing: At least one EU institution, eg EP, where we can meet MEPs involved in (fair) trade and attend a commission meeting. Plus a short walk in Brussels. --------------------------- Follow-up: At the seminar we will draft (political) propositions on the different themes, that will be used - to include in the FYEG political platform (voting will be necessary) - to propose on the World Greens conference in Sidney - to use in local campaigns/elections As a follow up we would also like to publish some kind of material as a documentation of the seminar. We're also expecting that the participants form some kind of network to keep them self informed and up to date with the development of "fair trade" after the seminar. We will also support member organizations with information on how to continue the work with fair trade and how to get involved in projects in co-operation with developing countries. ---------------------------------- Participants: 35 Age range: 18-30 'We aim at a gender/country balance' Profile of the participants and recruitment procedure: We are looking for young greens who already have been involved in social, international, economic or ecological issues. Reference Book on Fundraising. For the first time in Russia a reference book has been issued, which includes the full set of materials on fundraising - the modern technology for resource searching addressed to public, scientific, research organizations and individual applicants for any forms of support. The reader will find methods for budget implementation, a collection of standard documents, schemes and examples for grant application and rules on their filling in, contact information on donor organizations. That is to say, it includes everything required for effective work with foreign funds and partners. The main chapter consists of information on 872 foreign and international funds (in the alphabetical order on countries) cooperating with non-commercial, scientific, educational, governmental and commercial organizations from Russia and other post-Soviet countries. Each article includes the general information on fund, field of financing and type (profile) of activities and contact information. In the chapter "Internet addresses" you can find web sites of international donor organizations. For regional NGOs, which need to get technical assistance one can find the list of resource centers, arranged on geographical principle. The inquiry system allows quick search of the concrete fund by: - index of fund interests/field (sphere); - index of type of support; - alphabetical indexes of funds (in Russian and English); - indexes of funds with resident missions in CIS countries. Moreover, for the better orientation in the sphere of fundraising, there are short Russian- English and English-Russian glossaries and a large list of reference literature on methodology. The reference book "Where and How to Get Material Support-" opens the series of books "Your Guide in Charity" of the new Moscow publishing house "NON-PROFIT", whose priorities are the production of publications for the public sector in Russia and other CIS countries. Regarding the reference book "Where and How to Get Material Support-" (300 rubles), please contact the publishing house "NON-PROFIT" directly. New Grant-Making Guidelines for Charity Know How. Charity Know How (CKH) was set up in 1991 to help revitalize civil society in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Former Soviet Union (FSU) through the funding of skill-sharing partnership projects between British NGOs and organizations of those regions. Since 1991, CKH has supported more than 2,500 such projects, making awards totaling in excess of 3 million. We continue to provide small grants (up to 15,000) for skill-sharing partnerships between NGOs: eligible organizations may be formal and informal voluntary and non-profit organizations, or any group or organization, which, under British law, is considered to have charitable purposes. Projects should contain a significant element of transfer of know-how, and can include training programs for NGO staff and volunteers, professional advice and study visits. We are unable to fund applications from individuals, the preparation of funding proposals or applications, the teaching of English as a foreign language or other student programs, any building or capital costs, the costs of transporting humanitarian aid or medical equipment, the costs of offices, salaries or equipment (including fax machines and other communications equipment), or youth, artistic or cultural exchanges. We have recently made some changes to our guidelines by introducing target regions for our general grants program. Applications to the general program must now include as principal beneficiary an NGO in at least one of the countries in the four target regions listed below. Balkans and Carpathians Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Macedonia (FYROM), Romania, Slovakia Caucasus Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia Central Asia Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan Western CIS Belarus, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine NGOs from other countries in Central and Eastern Europe, (ie Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia) may apply as part of an application involving at least one NGO from one of these countries. Please note that there are no geographical restrictions or special conditions on work within the countries of the target regions. In addition to the General Program, we have also introduced two pilot programs, Partnership Development Grants and Global Grants, which are aimed at organizations working further afield. NB: The application form has also been slightly modified in keeping with these changes. Updated guidelines and application forms are now available from the CKH office. The next deadline for receipt of completed application forms is Tuesday 23 January 2000. Applications under the old guidelines and made on the old application form will not be accepted after that date.
